Gratitude and Righteous Deeds

“My Lord! Inspire me to be grateful for Your favour which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents, and to do righteous deeds with which You will be pleased. Admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants.”
Form: The imperative verb “awzi’nee” (inspire me / move me to gratitude). The supplication of the king-prophet Sulayman, who heard the speech of an ant.
Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi
Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “Sulayman possessed unprecedented power and understood the language of animals, yet this only brought out in him the utmost humility and the desire to be grateful to the Creator for the blessings bestowed.”
Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir notes: “Gratitude for a favour consists in acknowledging it with the heart, praising with the tongue and using the blessing in obedience to Allah.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi
The words of Allah, the Exalted: “…(And the Prophet Sulayman) smiled, laughing at her words…” Az-Zajjaj said: The greatest laughter among the prophets is a smile. The word of Allah, the Exalted, “dahikan” (laughing) means “smiling.”
It is said that at first it was a smile, then laughter, and then Sulayman praised his Lord for the blessings He had bestowed upon him. “…and he said: ‘My Lord, inspire me…’” Inspire me
“…(always) to give thanks (to You) for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon both my parents; and (make me such) that I (always) do righteous deeds with which You are pleased, and by Your mercy admit me among Your righteous servants!’ …” That is, admit me together with them, establish my name among their names, and gather me with them.
Ibn ‘Abbas said: He meant Ibrahim, Isma‘il, Ishaq and Ya‘qub, and the other prophets who came after them. It is said: Admit me to Paradise by Your mercy, among Your righteous servants.
In “Sahih Muslim” (No. 2734) there is a report about the greatness of gratitude (shukr) and the multiplication of blessings for it.
