Commentary and lessons

Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi

Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “Having attained complete earthly greatness, Yusuf was not carried away by worldly things; instead he turned his heart to the Everlasting Life, praying for the preservation of Islam until his last breath and for reunion with his righteous forefathers.”

Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir

Ibn Kathir points out: “This supplication combines the affirmation of tawhid, humility before the Majesty of the Creator, and a request for a good end in faith.”

Tafsir al-Baghawi

“…My Lord! You have indeed granted me (a great share) of sovereignty…” that is, sovereignty in Egypt. Sovereignty is having power over someone through policy and administration.

“…and taught me (some) of the interpretation of events…” that is, the interpretation of dreams. “…Creator…” that is, O Creator, “…of the heavens and the earth…” that is, their Maker.

“…You are my Protector…” that is, my Helper and Guarantor in my affair,

“…in (this) world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die as one who has submitted (to You)…” He says: “Make my life end while I am one who has submitted to You.” “…and join me with the righteous!”…” This means: with my forefathers, the prophets.

Supporting hadith

Sahih al-Bukhari (No. 4437) reports from Aisha that the last words of the Prophet Muhammad before his death were: “O Allah! To the Highest Companionship of the righteous!” (Allahumma fi r-Rafiq al-A‘la).
