Our Lord! Pour out upon us patience and cause us to die as Muslims.
Form: The verbs “afrigh” (أَفْرِغْ) and “tawaffana” (تَوَفنَا). The prayer of the former sorcerers of Pharaoh, who believed after the miracle of the staff of Musa and were faced with the threat of a painful execution.
Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi
Sheikh as-Saadi points out: “These people were still sorcerers and sinners in the morning, and by the evening they had become righteous martyrs. Having felt the strength of faith, they were not afraid of the tortures of Pharaoh and asked only for patience and for a death in Islam.”
Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir cites the words of Ibn Abbas: “At the beginning of the day they were sorcerers, and at the end of the day they became pious martyrs.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi
“And you take vengeance on us (O Pharaoh)…” You are angry with us. Ad-Dahhak said: You reproach us.
‘Ata said: “We are not guilty before you of anything for which you should punish us.”
“…only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us…” Then they turned to Allah, the Exalted, saying: “…Our Lord! Pour…”—that is, pour—
“…upon us patience, and cause us to die as those who have submitted (to You)!”…”
Al-Kalbi said: Pharaoh cut off their hands and feet and crucified them.
There is an opinion that Pharaoh was unable to do this, for Allah, the Exalted, said: “…so they will not reach you both. With Our signs, you two (O Musa and Harun) and those who follow you (both) will be victorious” (Surah “al-Qasas,” ayah 35).
In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad (No. 2410) there are reports about the greatness of the steadfastness of the believers in the face of cruel rulers.
