Wisdom and a Sound Heart

“My Lord! Grant me wisdom and join me with the righteous! Make me a mention of truth among the later generations! Place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Delight! Forgive my father… And do not disgrace me on the Day of Resurrection — the day when neither wealth nor sons will avail, except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart.”
Forms: The complex of Ibrahim’s supplications: “hab lee” (grant me), “alhiqnee” (join me), “ij’al lee” (make for me). The notion of the “sound heart” (qalb saleem) as the only salvation in the Hereafter.
Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi
Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “The sound heart is a heart free from shirk, doubt, envy, hatred and attachment to sins. Ibrahim’s good name has been preserved among all generations up to the Day of Judgement.”
Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir explains: “Allah answered Ibrahim’s prayer for a good memory: all nations (Muslims, Jews, Christians) love and venerate Ibrahim.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi
“…(And Ibrahim called upon Allah): ‘My Lord, grant me wisdom…’” Ibn ‘Abbas said: “Knowledge of the limits set by Allah and His laws.” Muqatil said: “Understanding and knowledge.” Al-Kalbi said: “Prophethood.”
“…and join me to (the company of) the righteous…”—with those prophets who came before me, in their standing and rank.
“…and grant me a truthful mention among those who come after…”—that is, a good report, a beautiful remembrance, and general acceptance among the communities that will live after me. Allah, Exalted is He, granted this to him and made him such that the adherents of all faiths take him as their ally and speak well of him. Al-Qutaybi said: “The word ‘lisan’ (tongue) is used in the verse instead of the word ‘speech,’ because people speak with it.”
“…and make me one of the inheritors of the Garden of Bliss…”—that is, among those who will be granted the Garden of Bliss.
“…and forgive my father, for indeed he was among those astray…” He said this before he knew that his father was an enemy of Allah; this has already been mentioned in Surah “at-Tawbah.” “…and do not disgrace me…”—and do not shame me— “…on the day when they are resurrected…” “…the day when neither wealth nor sons will avail…”
“…except for those who come to Allah with a sound heart!”—that is, with a soul pure of polytheism and doubts. As for sins, no one can be free of them. This is the opinion of most commentators.
Sa‘id bin al-Musayyib said: “A sound heart is a healthy heart, because the hearts of the unbeliever and the hypocrite are diseased.” Allah, Exalted is He, said: “In their hearts is a disease” (Surah “al-Baqarah,” verse 10).
Ibn ‘Uthman al-Nisaburi said: “It is a heart that is free of innovations and at peace with the Sunnah.”
In “Sahih al-Bukhari” (No. 4768) it is reported from Abu Hurayrah that Ibrahim will meet his father Azar on the Day of Judgement, but he will be transformed into a hyena because of his disbelief.
