Commentary and lessons

Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi

Sheikh as-Saadi explains: “A truthful entrance and a truthful exit mean that any beginnings and endings of a Muslim’s affairs must take place sincerely for the sake of Allah, with truthfulness and on the basis of Revelation.”

Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir

Ibn Kathir indicates: “Allah commanded the Messenger to ask for spiritual and state authority (sultan nasir) that would defend the Religion and establish justice.”

Tafsir al-Baghawi

The words of Allah, the Exalted: “...And say: ‘My Lord! Make me enter with a truthful entrance and make me depart with a truthful departure...’”

By “a truthful entrance” is meant “causing [someone] to enter,” and by “a truthful departure” is meant “causing [someone] to depart.” The scholars differed regarding its meaning.

Ibn ‘Abbas, al-Hasan, and Qatadah said: “Make me enter with a truthful entrance” means: Make me enter Medina; and “make me depart with a truthful departure” means: Make me leave Mecca. This verse was revealed when the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was commanded to emigrate.

Al-Dahhak said: Make me leave Mecca with a truthful departure, protecting me from the polytheists; and make me enter with a truthful entrance, that is, make me enter Mecca, granting me victory over them.

Mujahid said: Make me enter with a truthful entrance into the mission for which You sent me as a prophet, and make me leave this worldly life with a truthful departure—that is, one in which I have fulfilled what was made obligatory upon me.

Al-Hasan said: “Make me enter with a truthful entrance” means: into Paradise; and make me leave Mecca with a truthful departure.

There is also the opinion that “make me enter with a truthful entrance” means: make me enter into obedience to You, and “make me depart with a truthful departure” means: make me leave forbidden acts.

There is also the opinion that “make me enter with a truthful entrance” means: make me enter there as You caused me to enter with truth, and make me depart with truth; that is, do not make me enter with one face and leave with another, for hypocrites will not be safe or honored before Allah. Allah, the Exalted, described the entrance and departure together with truth because entrance and departure are interpreted in terms of truth when they concern victory, might, and the Islamic state.

Likewise, He described the word qadam (foot) together with truth, saying: “...that they will have a truthful standing with their Lord” (Surah Yunus, verse 2). “...and grant me, from Yourself, a supporting authority...”

Mujahid said: A clear proof. Al-Hasan said: A mighty authority, by means of which You will help me against those who oppose me, and a dignity by means of which I may uphold Your religion. Allah promised him that He would take power away from the Persians, the Romans, and others, and then grant that power to him.

Qatadah said: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) knew that he had no strength to carry out this command unless Allah granted him strength and help. So he asked for prevailing strength: the Book of Allah, His ordinances, and the establishment of His religion.

Supporting hadith
