“Our Lord! Grant us mercy from Yourself and prepare for us from our affair right guidance.”
Forms: The verbs “atina” (آتِنَا — grant) and “hayyi’” (هَيِّئْ — prepare/facilitate). The prayer of the believing young men who fled from a pagan tyrant in order to preserve their faith.
Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi
Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “These young men combined striving and flight from fitnah with sincere supplication to the Creator. They asked Allah for mercy as protection from enemies and for sound guidance in making decisions.”
Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir notes: “Allah sheltered them in the cave, plunged them into sleep for 309 years and protected their faith from the encroachments of the pagans in answer to their sincere prayer.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi
And Allah, the Exalted, said: “...when the (believing) young men took refuge in the cave...” that is, entered it. They say: So-and-so took refuge in such-and-such a place, that is, he took that place as his dwelling.
“...in the cave...” that is, a hollow in Mount Banjalus; the cave is called Khayram.
“...and they said: ‘Our Lord! Grant us mercy from Yourself...’” The meaning of “mercy” in this verse is “guidance to the straight path in the Faith.” Another opinion is that it means provision. “...and make easy for us...” — make it easy for us —
“...rectitude in our affair...” — guide us to do such deeds as please You and constitute the straight path for us. Ibn ‘Abbas said: Rectitude means emerging from the cave unharmed.
In “Sahih Muslim” (No. 809) it is narrated about the merit of memorising the first 10 verses of Surah “Al-Kahf” for protection from the temptations of the Dajjal.
