“Our Lord, we have believed in what You have sent down, and we have followed the Messenger; so write us down among the witnesses.”
Form: The imperative “uktubna” (اكْتُبْنَا — write us down). A prayerful address of the sincere supporters of the Prophet Isa (the Hawariyyun), who openly acknowledged faith and following the Messenger.
Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi
Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “The disciples combined in their supplication two great pillars: belief in the Revelation that was sent down and practical following of the Messenger.”
Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir explains: “The witnesses are the community of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), which on the Day of Judgement will testify before all peoples to the prophetic mission of the Messengers.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi
“…Our Lord! We have believed in what You have sent down…” from His Book, “…and we have followed the Messenger…” Jesus.
“…so write us down among those who bear witness!…”—those who testified to the truthfulness of Your prophets. ‘Ata’ said: (that is,) among the prophets, for every prophet is a witness for his community.
Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: (that is,) with Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) and his community, because they testify that the messengers delivered the message.
In Sahih al-Bukhari (No. 4487) it is narrated from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri that the Prophet said: “On the Day of Resurrection Nuh will come, and his people will ask… Then you will come and bear witness.”
