“My Lord! Have mercy on them both, as they brought me up when I was small.”
Form: The imperative “irhamhuma” (ارْحَمْهُمَا — have mercy on them both). A direct Quranic command of Allah to pray for parents with gratitude for their upbringing and care.
Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi
Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “Humility before parents is manifested in gentleness of speech, care and kind treatment. The supplication for mercy upon them is an immutable duty of every grateful son and daughter.”
Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir notes: “Allah commanded making dua for parents both during their lifetime and after their death, as a sign of appreciation for their immense labour and their nightly vigils.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi
“...And lower before them both the wing of humility...” That is, be gentle toward them and humble before them. ‘Urwa ibn al-Zubayr said: Show them such gentleness that you do not refrain from doing what they want. “...out of mercy...” showing mercy.
“...and say: ‘My Lord! Have mercy upon them, just as they raised me when I was little’...” This means, when both of them were believers.
Ibn ‘Abbas said: Acting upon this verse was abrogated by the words of Allah, Exalted is He: “It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists...” (Surah al-Tawbah, verse 113).
It is reported from ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Amr, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), that he said: “Allah’s pleasure lies in the parent’s pleasure, and Allah’s anger lies in the parent’s anger.” (At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban)
It is reported from Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The talebearer, the one who disobeys his parents, and the consumer of intoxicants will not enter Paradise.” (An-Nasa’i, Ahmad, ad-Darimi)
In “Sahih Muslim” (No. 1631) it is narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet Muhammad said: “When a person dies, all his deeds cease except three: continuous charity, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for him!”
