Our Lord! Do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people, and save us by Your mercy from the disbelieving people.
Form: The prohibitive construction “laa taj‘alnaa” (not make us) and the petition “najjinaa” (save us). The prayer of the oppressed young men from the people of Musa, who placed their trust in Allah.
Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi
Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “Do not make us a trial — this means: do not give the tyrants power over us, so that they do not think that they are upon the truth, and do not begin to tempt us in our faith.”
Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir explains: “Mujahid said: this means ‘Do not give us over into the power of the oppressors, so that they do not force us to renounce our religion’.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi
And they said (to the Prophet Musa): “(Only) in Allah have we placed our trust…” They relied upon Him, and then he supplicated to Allah:
“Our Lord, do not make us a trial for the wrongdoing people…” that is, do not help them against us or destroy us at their hands, for they will think that we were not upon the truth and will sink even further into error.
Mujahid said: Do not punish us with a punishment from Yourself, for the people of Pharaoh will say: “If they had been upon the truth, they would not have been punished,” and they will think that they are better than us, and this will become a trial for them. “…and save us, by Your mercy, from the disbelieving people!”
In Sahih al-Bukhari (No. 6347) it is reported from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed for deliverance from the burden of trials and from being overcome by enemies.
