Commentary and lessons

Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi

Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “Do not make us a trial for the disbelievers means: do not give them victory over us because of our sins, lest they think that their falsehood is stronger than the truth.”

Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir

Ibn Kathir explains: “Mujahid said: do not afflict us with punishment at their hands and do not send calamity upon us, otherwise they will say: ‘If they had been upon the truth, this would not have befallen them!’”

Tafsir al-Baghawi

“…There has already been for you a good example…” an exemplar

“…in Ibrahim and those who were with him…” from among the believers “…When they said to their people:…” who were polytheists

“…‘Indeed, we are free of you…’ The word “burāʾ” is the plural form of the word “barīʾ.”

“…and of what you worship besides Allah. We have disbelieved in you…” meaning, we have rejected and repudiated your faith

“…And enmity and hatred have begun between us and you forever, until you believe in Allah alone…” Allah, the Exalted, commands Hatib and the believers to take as an example Ibrahim (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the believers who were with him, in disavowing the polytheists.

“…Except for Ibrahim’s words to his father: ‘I will surely and most certainly ask forgiveness for you’…” That is, there is a good example for you in Ibrahim and his deeds, except for his appeal to Allah to forgive his father, who was a polytheist. Ibrahim (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his father: “I will ask Allah to forgive you,” but then he disavowed his father, as we have already mentioned in the surah “at-Tawbah.”

“…‘And I have no power to do anything for you against Allah’…” Ibrahim said to his father: “I will not be able to save or protect you from Allah’s punishment if you disobey Him and associate partners with Him.”

“…‘Our Lord, in You we have placed our trust…’” Ibrahim and the believers who were with him said:

“…and to You we have turned (in repentance), and to You is the return (on the Day of Resurrection)!…”

“…Our Lord! Do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve…” Az-Zajjaj said: Do not grant them victory over us, lest they think that they are in the right and thus be deceived.

Mujahid said: Do not punish us at their hands, and do not send down a punishment upon us from Yourself, lest they say: “If these people had been in the right, this would not have befallen them.” “…and forgive us. Our Lord, indeed You are the Almighty, the Wise!…”
