“My Lord, do not leave me alone, for You are the best of inheritors.”
Form: The prohibitive construction “laa tadharnee” (لَا تَذَرْنِي — do not leave me alone) together with the praise of the Creator. A prayer for the granting of a child in a state of loneliness and old age.
Tafsir of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Saadi
Sheikh as-Saadi writes: “Zakariyya asked for a righteous heir who would continue the call to the religion, and at the same time he added: ‘You are the best of inheritors,’ expressing complete reliance upon the decision of Allah.”
Tafsir of Imam Ibn Kathir
Ibn Kathir notes: “Allah healed his barren wife and granted him the Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) in answer to his sincere and constant perseverance in supplication.”
Tafsir al-Baghawi
The words of Allah, the Exalted: “...And (remember) Zakariyya, when he called upon his Lord...” that is, he supplicated to his Lord,
“...‘My Lord, do not leave me alone...’” alone, with no children, and grant me an heir,
“...for You are the best of inheritors!’...” He praised Allah because He will remain when all creatures have vanished, and He is the best of those who remain alive.
In Sahih al-Bukhari (No. 3371) it is reported concerning the merit of the righteous prophets who turned to Allah with hope and fear.
